4 ways to show your dog you love them

October 2020

We all love our furry friends (sometimes more than the humans in our lives!), but do we take the time to show them in ways they understand? Making a few simple adjustments to your normal day can reap big rewards for the relationship between you and your pup. We’ve put together 4 easy ways to show your dog how much they mean to you.

1. Random acts of praise

We all practiced praise as a reward when we were training our tiny pups, but they don’t always need to be performing a trick or behaving themselves in order to get a ‘Good boy or Girl!’. By praising them when they are simply lying there being quiet or doing something cute, you help to reinforce their good behaviour in general. Go over and give them 30 seconds of love, in a kind, calm demeanour when they least expect it. Healthy treats can also be given for no apparent reason too. We stock ByBenji Biltong for Dogs, which we believe to be a real high value, gourmet quality, dog treat. It’s high in protein, low in salt and fat and free from the sugars, additives, carbs and artificial flavour that so many supermarket brands contain. We have all their products in stock on our website and whats more have an exclusive 10% discount on at the moment. Order some for your furry friend to make them feel the love.

2. Gentle touch

Did you know that hugging or patting your dog on the head can be interpreted by them as signs of dominance? Instead, try gently massaging their bellies or behind their ears. Brushing them with a soft brush also feels great to them and is not only a nice way to show affection, but also keeps them looking super fly.

3. Create morning cuddle time

We’re all familiar with that lovely buzz we get from hugging our dogs. Well it’s a real, scientific thing! Cuddling our canines increases our levels of oxytocin (also known as the love hormone), which is a neurotransmitter that calms your nervous system down, relaxing you and increasing your trust. So, how much better might your crazy morning routine get if you could find an extra 5-10 minutes for some morning cuddle time with your pup, before they go off to day care. It will not only brighten your mood and set the right tone for you day, but it will show them how much you love them.

4. Let them feel part of your busy day

We all lead hectic London lives, but its really easy to incorporate simple ways to show our dogs how important they are to us. When working from home, let them hang around at your feet, or on your lap, or give them a nice ear massage while you’re on that conference call. Take them out for a brisk walk round the block in between calls or take them with you in the car while you run an errand. Pets respond to interaction, even the simplest kind, so these small acts of love not only show them you care, but also gives you great company, too.
